Laser dentistry is utilized in many ways throughout the dental field. The laser delivers energy in the form of light. Depending on the intended result, the energy travels at different wavelengths and is absorbed by a "target." In dentistry, these targets can be enamel, decay, gum tissue, or whitening enhancers. Each one absorbs a different wavelength of light while reflecting others. Laser dentistry can be used for both tooth and soft tissue related procedures. For soft tissue (surgical) procedures it eliminates the need for suturing and healing is much faster.
In our practice, we utilize a diode laser - most often used in soft tissue procedures. This could mean removing any excess gum tissue around a tooth, or perhaps eliminating a deep periodontal pocket. We often use laser therapy in addition to deep cleanings around teeth to help resolve more advanced gum disease. If you're being seen for cosmetic procedures, Dr. Hulver will often use the laser to sculpt the gum tissue to give the most esthetic result.
The laser is used nearly every day in our practice, and is one of our most valuable tools!
